Pets and a Clean Home: It's Possible
Living with pets doesn't mean living in a mess. With the right systems and tools, you can maintain a clean, fresh-smelling home even with multiple furry family members. Here's how.
Establish a Cleaning Routine
Consistency is everything. Daily quick tasks β like sweeping high-traffic areas and wiping down surfaces β prevent buildup. Weekly deep cleans tackle embedded hair, dander, and odors. A routine takes the overwhelm out of pet-related messes.
Tackle Pet Hair Proactively
Brush your pets regularly to reduce shedding at the source. A de-shedding tool used 2β3 times per week can dramatically reduce the amount of hair that ends up on your furniture and floors. Use washable covers on sofas and chairs for easy cleanup.
Control Odors
Pet odors come from dander, saliva, urine, and general "pet smell." Wash pet bedding weekly. Use an enzymatic cleaner for accidents β regular cleaners mask odors but don't break down the compounds that cause them. Air purifiers with HEPA filters capture dander and reduce airborne odors.
Manage Muddy Paws
Keep a towel and a small tub of water near the door for post-walk paw cleaning. Paw wipes are a quick alternative. A washable entry mat catches dirt before it spreads through the house.
Pet-Safe Cleaning Products
Many common cleaning products contain chemicals that are toxic to pets. Look for pet-safe, plant-based cleaners. Avoid products containing bleach, ammonia, phenols, or essential oils like tea tree and eucalyptus, which can be harmful to cats and dogs.
Smart Storage
- Store pet food in airtight containers to prevent pests and odors
- Keep toys in a designated basket to reduce clutter
- Use a lint roller station near the door for quick clothing touch-ups
- Designate pet-free zones to give yourself a break from hair and dander
