Do cooling dog beds actually work?
The short answer
Elevated mesh cots and breathable covers let heat escape so a dog sleeps cooler than on plush, but no bed protects a pet from a hot room or a hot car.
Cooling beds come in three kinds: raised mesh cots, breathable fabric or sponge beds, and gel or water pads. The first two work by letting air and heat move; none of them is air conditioning.
How each kind works
An elevated cot lifts the dog off hot ground and lets air move underneath, which is why they are popular outdoors and on patios.
Breathable covers and open foam hold less heat than thick plush, so a dog lying on them stays closer to the room temperature.
The limit
A bed can only be as cool as the room. Shade, water and a cool space matter far more. Heat stress in a pet is an emergency: if your dog is panting heavily, weak or unsteady in the heat, call your vet right away.

Are gel cooling mats safe?
They are fine for dogs that lie on them and do not chew. A dog that chews bedding should not be left alone with a gel mat.
Will my dog actually use a raised cot?
Most do once it is where they already like to lie. Put a familiar blanket on it for the first few days.
