The encyclopedia · 10 guides
Every pet gear question, answered before you buy.
Each guide opens with a one-sentence answer, then the detail, then the arguments people actually have. Some of the answers are: this will not do what the box says. None of it is veterinary advice; for your pet's health, ask your vet.
Stop Pulling
Shop Stop Pulling →Does a no-pull harness actually stop a dog pulling?
A front-clip harness takes the force off the throat and makes pulling less effective, but only training teaches a dog to walk on a loose leash.
Read the guide →How do I measure my dog for a harness?
Measure the chest just behind the front legs and the neck where a collar sits, two fingers under the tape, then match both to one size row.

Better Sleep & Comfort
Shop Better Sleep & Comfort →Do orthopedic dog beds help older dogs?
Thick, supportive foam spreads an older dog's weight so hips and shoulders are not pressed into the floor. It is comfort and support, not a treatment.
Read the guide →Do cooling dog beds actually work?
Elevated mesh cots and breathable covers let heat escape so a dog sleeps cooler than on plush, but no bed protects a pet from a hot room or a hot car.

Travel Safer
Shop Travel Safer →Does a seat cover keep my dog safe in the car?
No: a seat cover or hammock protects the seat and stops falls into the footwell, but it does not restrain a dog in a crash.
Read the guide →Ramp or stairs to get my dog into the car?
A ramp suits large, older or stiff dogs that should not jump; stairs suit smaller dogs and lower heights like a sofa or bed.

Feed Smarter
Shop Feed Smarter →Do pet water fountains help cats drink more?
Many cats prefer moving, fresh water and drink more from a clean fountain, but not every cat does, and a fountain only helps if it is cleaned.
Read the guide →Are automatic pet feeders worth it?
For dry food on a fixed schedule, yes: an automatic feeder serves measured portions on time, but it is not a substitute for someone checking on your pet.

Cleaner Home
Shop Cleaner Home →What makes a litter box easier to keep clean?
A non-porous material like stainless steel, enough size for your cat, and daily scooping do more for odor than any scent or additive.
Read the guide →How do I keep my home clean with a dog or cat?
Stop mess where it starts: washable covers where your pet lies, a wipe-down spot by the door, and regular brushing so hair lands in the brush, not the sofa.

Quick answers
The questions people argue about
Is a front-clip harness bad for a dog's shoulders?
The debate is about harnesses whose chest strap sits across the front of the shoulders and restricts the stride. A Y-shaped front that leaves the shoulders free avoids most of that. If your dog has a joint or gait problem, ask your vet which design suits them.
How tight should a harness be?
Two fingers should slide flat under every strap. Tighter can rub; looser lets a dog reverse out of it.
Is memory foam better than egg-crate foam?
Usually. Egg-crate (convoluted) foam is thinner at the troughs and compresses faster. Solid foam of the same thickness gives more even support.
Are gel cooling mats safe?
They are fine for dogs that lie on them and do not chew. A dog that chews bedding should not be left alone with a gel mat.
Is a booster seat safe for a small dog?
A booster seat lifts a small dog to see out and keeps them in one place. Its safety in a crash depends on how it is anchored and what the dog is clipped to; a tether clipped to a collar is not safe. Clip to a harness.
My dog refuses the ramp. What now?
Usually it feels unstable or too steep. Brace it so it does not move, lower the angle, and practise with treats before using it on the car.
Is a fountain better than a bowl for every cat?
No. Some cats ignore it or are spooked by the pump noise. Keep the old bowl out for the first couple of weeks and let the cat choose.
Can a feeder help my pet lose weight?
It helps you serve exactly the amount you choose, and nothing more. How much that should be is a question for your vet.
Covered or open litter box?
Covered boxes keep litter in and smell out of the room, but they also keep smell in for the cat. Some cats refuse them. If yours does, go open.
Do air purifiers help with pet hair?
A purifier with a true HEPA filter captures airborne dander and fine hair. It does not replace vacuuming what has already landed.
