Does a seat cover keep my dog safe in the car?

The short answer

No: a seat cover or hammock protects the seat and stops falls into the footwell, but it does not restrain a dog in a crash.

Hammocks and seat covers are genuinely useful. They keep hair, mud and claws off the upholstery and give a large dog a flat place to lie. Safety in a crash is a separate job.

What a cover does

It protects the seat, blocks the gap to the footwell so a dog does not slide into it under braking, and keeps a dog on the back seat and out of the front.

What restrains a dog

Restraint comes from a harness designed for the car, clipped to the seat belt or an anchor point, or a secured crate. Look for products that state independent crash testing, and read exactly what was tested.

A dog should never ride in the front seat of a car with an airbag, and never be clipped to the car by a collar.
