Keeping It Clean
Rinse the bowl and change the water every two to three days, and take the pump apart to clean it roughly once a week. A fountain left standing grows biofilm faster than a bowl does, because the pump keeps the water warm and moving.
A fountain can encourage a pet to drink more, but it is not a treatment for any medical condition. Sudden changes in how much your pet drinks — up or down — can signal kidney disease, diabetes, or urinary problems, and are a reason to call your veterinarian, not to buy a fountain.
